CenturyLink made surprise check presentations to 12 teachers throughout Utah in May, dividing up $47,000 in grant money. Rachel Cheney, a fifth-grade teacher at Fox Hollow Elementary in Lehi, applied for the grant months ago and found out Tuesday, May 8, that she was awarded $4,600.03.

The fifth-grade classes and teachers at Fox Hollow Elementary were getting ready to board buses to attend a Hope of America rehearsal in Provo when Kelly Hazard with CenturyLink and Principal Darrin Johnson presented Cheney with a giant check and balloons. Cheney, who is in her second year of teaching, and her students were excited to celebrate the award.

“I found out about this grant through a co-worker and I thought it sounded like a great opportunity, so I applied,” said Rachel Cheney. “I’m going to get iPads and Osmo kits for my classroom.” Osmo is an award-winning game system that fosters creativity and problem-solving skills through hands-on play and it is compatible with iPads. “The Osmo kits help with engagement in my Math Centers” added Cheney.

The CenturyLink grant will allow Cheney to buy 11 iPads and Osmo kits, permitting her to give one-to-one time with the technology for her students during Math Centers.
